"My formal training is in painting. I think of painting as the highest art form. I am trying to find a way to paint; all of this activity leading towards painting. I don't want my work to be called sculpture. It seems a lack of respect for sculpture to term this sculpture - sculpture has a proud tradition of its own. J am not interested in that. I don't need it. Matisse made these beautiful sculptures of heads, busts. If you turn your vision by a millimeter you get a new Matisse drawing - that is an interesting phenomenon to me. That's where I first started to play with the possibilities myself."

AI Taylor wurde 1948 In Springfield, Missouri/USA geboren.
Er starb 1999 in New York.
AI Taylor bezeichnete sich selbst als Maler. In den siebziger Jahren entstand ein Werkkomplex starkfarbiger Bilder, die nahezu unbekannt geblieben sind. Im Kunstparterre sind diese Gemälde aus dem Nachlass erstmals in Europa zu sehen.
Seine Skulpturen, vielfach aus gefundenen Materialien gearbeitet, sind Konstruktionen, deren Grundgedanken er gern in Papierarbeiten aufgriff und weiterentwickelte. Skulpturen waren für AI Taylor ein Weg zurück zur Malerei.
